What is the Green Homes Grant?

The Green Homes Grant is a government run scheme that has been created to improve the energy performance of homes within the UK. Running from the end of September 2020 until March 2022, this scheme allows homeowners and residential landlords to apply for a voucher towards the cost of installing energy efficient improvements to your home. With a more energy efficient home, you will save money spent on bills while helping create a greener future for us all. After checking your eligibility, applications can be made here.

Since the Green Homes Grant has commenced, many in Kent and throughout the UK have found it confusing to find the correct information on how to apply and who is eligible. We here at SecureStyle can help!

With only TrustMark registered businesses being able to carry out work under the Green Homes Grant, it is important that you partner with a trusted local installer in Kent. We here at SecureStyle are TrustMark registered. This ensures that our work carried out meets Green Homes Grant quality standards while maintaining consumer protection.

What is included in the Green Homes Grant?

The UK government have split the available works included in the Green Homes Grant into primary and secondary measures. Primary measures include works that improve insulation and low carbon heating measures. With this, households in Kent and the rest of the UK must use their voucher to install at least one primary measure before considering secondary measures such as windows and doors.

Homeowners will be able to claim a voucher up to £5,000 for their home improvements. Any low-income households in Kent or the UK can claim up to £10,000 in funding.

The primary measures that homeowners will need to consider are as follows:

  • Insulation:  Solid wall, flat roof, under-floor, room in roof or cavity wall insulation.
  • Low carbon heating: Air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, solar thermal, biomass boiler or hybrid heat pump.

If one of these primary measures are installed to your home, your voucher can then be used to help install a secondary measure. The overall level of funding that you will receive for your Kent home will not exceed what was granted for the primary measure home improvements.

Secondary measures included in the Green Homes Grant include:

  • Draught proofing.
  • Windows and doors: Double or triple glazing (when replacing single glazing), secondary glazing (in addition to single glazing) and energy efficient replacement doors (replacing single glazed or solid doors installed before 2002).
  • Heating controls and insulation: Appliances such as thermostats, smart heating controls, zone controls, intelligent delayed start thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves.

Can I upgrade my double glazing in Kent?

Unfortunately, if you already have double glazing installed within your home you will not be able to apply for funding to replace existing double glazing. The Green Homes Grant can be used to replace and improve windows that are single glazed. Even if you do have double glazing, you can apply for funding for other aspects.

This being said, glazing on its own does not qualify for the scheme. You will need to complete one of the primary measures first as part of the package. After this, glazing can be improved as part of the larger project as it is a secondary measure.

If you are looking to replace a front door, this is also classed as a secondary measure and will require a primary measure to be carried out first. In addition to this, in order to receive funding to replace a front door, it must have been installed prior to 2002. If you are interested in replacing back or any other doors, please get in touch for further clarification on whether these aspects qualify.
